University of the Azores is located in São Miguel Island of the Azores archipelago. The Azores archipelago, a Portuguese autonomous region, is located in the North Atlantic about 1500 km from Lisbon and about 3900 km from the east coast of North America It is a beautiful archipelago consisting of nine volcanic islands with stunning coast and ocean, and year-round mild weather. In 2008, the Azores was ranked second among 111 world island destinations for sustainable tourism by National Geographic Traveler. Some of the main coastal recreational activities include sailing, yachting, boat tour, cruise tourism, scuba diving, whale and dolphin watching, swimming with dolphins, and sport fishing. Weekly direct flights are also offered from USA and Canada to Ponta Delgada (São Miguel Island). Flight reservations can be made online from SATA and TAP There are several charter carriers offering direct connections from the Nordic countries, Germany, the UK, Spain and the Netherlands. However, these flights are not always in operation, please check with the travel agency of your home country for updated information. Accomodations Students are welcome to stay at the University´s dormitory. The dormitory (see photo below) provides laundry service, and is equipped with laundry service and 24-hour surveillance.
